My friends in Columbia planned to throw a surprise baby shower during my last stint there in late February. Unfortunately, after an overnighter in the hospital with severe dehydration, I was a little spooked about being several hours away from home and decided--sadly--that I couldn't make it. No matter! The girls called me up, and we had the shower anyway. The gifts arrived later the next week, but the cake was devoured by all who were present. My friend Beverly designed the cake; how well she knows me!
